Epilepsy Education and Very Young Students
As an educator of young students, you know the importance of teaching acceptance of one another. A valuable lesson you can teach preschoolers and kindergarteners is that people with epilepsy, or any other “difference,” are just like everyone else. Students will benefit from learning that a classmate with epilepsy or any other different characteristic is just as able, and just as deserving of friendship and acceptance, as everyone else.
Preschool and kindergarten students are curious about the world around them and typically have lots of questions. At this point in their development, their attention is focused on and typically revolves around what is happening “in the moment.” The purpose of a lesson for children of this age is to reassure students who may be frightened if they have witnessed a seizure.
EpilepsyAdvocate™ has put together some teaching tools designed specifically for your younger students. These tools will help your students understand more about people with differences, including epilepsy. We’ve also included a fact sheet that you might consider giving to the parents of any student who witnessed a classmate having a seizure.
